New short vowel digital Word Family activities!
Hi there! I thought some of you might like to know that I’ve just added digital Short Vowel Word Family activities to my store. The materials include short reading passages with CVC, CVCC, and CCVC words, and a variety of practice activities with moving pieces for your students!
My intention in writing this post is to give you an in depth look at the materials included so you can decide if this is a good fit for your students!
I also wanted to share that there is a printable version of these stories, and similar activities in my TpT Store.
And now, without further ado, I present you my Digital Word Family Activities!
As you will see, There are 5 packets of word family activities available, one for each short vowel sound.
Unique Digital Word Family Activities!
I put a lot of thought into this packet to make it interactive, yet easy to use. As you will see, I made sure to include a lot in these files to make it worth your purchase! Besides Short a, there are packets for Short e, Short i, Short o, and Short u!
The description below is for the Short a packet, but the other packets follow the exact same pattern.
Day 1 Activities
On Day 1, your students are introduced to the story of the week and to the word families that they’ll be focusing on.
In the first activity, your students read the passage, then they drag the highlighting tape over the words that are part of the word family they are working on. For the second one, students drag each card under the correct heading to sort them into the two target word families of the week
You can see the activities in action in this video:
Day 2 Activities
On Day 2, your students get to read the story again, and since they’ve seen the text twice now, I felt adding comprehension questions would be perfect!
I love integrating an ABC order activity with one that has target words from the story and otherwise! The first activity requires students to read the story and drag the heart at the end of each question to the correct answer. The second one requires students to drag each card in the correct alphabetical order.
You can see the activities in action in this video:
Day 3 Activities
The practice continues on Day 3! By now, most students will be able to anticipate what words are missing in each space in this Cloze Reading Passage! All they need to do is drag the words that fill in the blanks!
The second activity gives them an opportunity to create their own words by dragging letters onto the chart.
See it in action here:
Day 4 Activities
On Day 4, students are presented with the story once again, this time, for a set of True and False questions! They’ll drag the pointing finger under the choice they made for each question.
The second activity on Day 4 is one of the most challenging ones because it requires manipulating words to create sentences. Your students will move the words around until they unscramble each sentence. You will have an answer key for every activity in this packet, so you’ll know what each sentence is!
Here’s how the pieces move:
Day 5 Activities
This is the last day of activities for these 2 word families. The first assignment requires students to drag the highlighting tape onto the sentence that matches the picture in each box. Both sentences use target words, which is another way I added reading practice to this resource!
The second assignment is a fill in the blanks, which is also a bit challenging. Your students will have to read the words and the sentences, then decide how to complete each one. Again, you have all the answer keys that make figuring out the answers zero-prep for you!
And the last video!
